Labrador Retriever: Dogs With Impeccable And Innate Retrieval Skills

A Retriever breed of Dog commonly mistaken for the Golden Retriever!

Ever wondered why some Golden Retrievers have seemingly-odd short coats? We'd bet that you might have encountered a different breed — a Labrador Retriever. This Dog breed's kind face and friendly nature have long secured a special place in many hearts, along with its innate skills for well, retrieving of course.☺

Labrador Retriever History

Also commonly known as Labrador, this breed’s origins and ancestral roots can be traced back to the St. John’s Water Dog, in 1822. St. John’s Water Dogs were bred by island settlers of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada— with original purposes for retrieving and hauling in fish nets. Prior to the exportation of St. John’s Water Dog during the 1820s, news of their useful abilities have already spread throughout England.

Fun Fact #1      Scottish-Canadian explorer William Epps Cormack described, these Dogs had impeccable retrieving skills and short coats that prevented ice frosting when they came out of waters during cold seasons.

It was also speculated that the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury came across a St. John’s Dog on a fishing boat, and he made immediate arrangements for traders to begin importing these Dogs into England. The first photo record of a St. John’s Dog/Labrador was of Nell, belonging to the Earl of Home. During the 1870s, the name Labrador Retriever became common throughout England. A Yellow Labrador, Ben of Hyde, was first born in 1899, registered by The Kennel Club in 1903. The AKC (American Kennel Club) had their first Labrador registration in 1917.

Appearance: Working and Companion Types

Size — Labs are generally medium to large sized, with two different breed lines.
  • Companion type usually have shorter legs, and rounder faces
  • Working type have a taller and lighter framed body, and longer muzzle.

Fun Fact #2      The two different breed lines do not pose a difference within Dog Registries though, they are equally considered as Labrador Retrievers.

Features — Kind and expressive facial features such as their eyes and large down-turned ears makes it tough not to be reminded of the Golden Retriever, another breed known for similar skills and gentle nature!

Coats — All Labradors have short dense coats that are water resistant, a little dry and naturally oily, making them perfect for retrieving fowls and not feel cold in water.

Colour — Labrador Retrievers are available in 3 main colour groups, such as Black, Chocolate and Yellow, with Yellow consisting a range from Cream to Fox Red.

Grooming Requirements

These Doggos do not require a ton of scrupulous grooming, it is necessary to note that Labs are shedders in general. Regular brushing aids in ridding loose hairs, speeding up the process of natural shedding— also greatly decreasing chances of hair build-up around the house! A shower once in every two months at least, and ensure that their ears are cleaned with a Vet-approved cleanser and completely dried at all times. Other necessary grooming includes trimming of nails when too long.

If you are unsure of how to perform these tasks, seek professional help with a trusted Groomer and/or Veterinarian!☺

Labrador Retriever Personality and Temperament

When gentle appearances match up with sweet natures, its a pleasant occurrence nonetheless. Labs are excellent companions and double up as a great working Dogs for various organizations such as the Military, Navy and Police all at the same time— their amazing ability to track scents all the way back to its origins is detection at its finest!

Fun Fact #3      Labradors are generally trained for retrieving fowls gently with their jaws. Observe a little closer, and you'd notice this adorable and habitual behaviour of holding something in their mouths.

Being naturally active Dogs and great retrievers proves that you are bound to enjoy a ton of outdoor fun and playtime activity such as a game of fetch. Labradors today are exceptionally all-rouned. Don’t hesitate on taking them out for a walk and/or a run, or embark on a rewarding pet-ownership with positive training to encourage obedience. Watch those behavioural quirks!— Natural curiosity, swallowing small objects and begging for food is not unbeknownst of a Lab.

Training — Proper training can begin from a Lab's maturity age of 3 years. Early-training prevents encourages proper behaviour in the long run. It is also advised that Labrador Retrievers may not make good guard Dogs. Usually friendly and easy going even with strangers and people, it wouldn't take much effort in winning their hearts over. With proper care, diet and lots of love, a Labrador can live from 10 to 14 years or more.

If a breed's playful, puppy-like behaviour, hyper-activeness and being easily distracted are issues you might not fancy, then you ought to consider a different breed or Pet.

Fun Fact #4      Being easily distracted is a well-known Labrador trait☺, and it is highly due to their keen sense of smell!

Scottish Fold Cat Breed: Undeniably Adorable Cats From Scotland

Temperament, Care Tips, and History Of The Scottish Fold Cat

If you have always been charmed by the large doe-eyes of Puss-in-boots, know that you'd very well be smitten by this Cat breed. Coupled with guilt-ridden fold ears and all-rounded physiques, these Kitties bring a whole new level of adorable meowsomeness.

Do they have a personality to match their cute appearances?

Where Did Scottish Fold Cats Come From?

The origin of this Cat breed can be traced back to a barn Cat from Perthshire, Scotland in 1961. Namely an all-white female Scottish Fold named Susie, that went on to produce two kittens— one of which was adopted by William Ross, a fellow farmer and Cat enthusiast whom named his kitten Snooks. Together with his friend Pat Turner (also a geneticist), the duo began a breeding program.

Fun Fact #1      All Scottish Fold Cats share ancestry ties to Susie, the original Scottish Fold Cat!
Suzie, the first scottish fold

The Scottish Fold breed was first recognized in 1966 by GCCF (Governing Council of the Cat Fancy) of Great Britain. Registrations were then ceased in 1971, after the unfortunate discovery of limb and tail deformity, ear infections and deafness in some Scottish Fold Cats. Eventually, some were exported to America and crossbred with American Shorthair and British Shorthair Cats— the issue of deformity and ear infections are believed to have not surfaced since. The Scottish Fold Cat was then recognized by the CFA (Cat Fanciers’ Association) in 1977.

Scottish Fold Appearance

Size — This is a Medium sized breed with a rounded but robust appearance. Adult males can weigh from 4 to 6 kgs, and females from 3 to 4 kgs.

Features — In direct co-relation to their name, not only is this Cat from Scotland, the unmistakable folded ears are unique to its own breed. The rounded head, face, and large eyes may sometimes bear a resemblance to that of a Munchkin Cat. Tails are often long and densely packed with consistent hair thickness as their bodies.

Fun Fact #2      Original Scottish Folds have only one fold in their ears, but selective breeding has resulted in double or more folds, giving an almost flattened like appearance to those ears in modern Scottish Folds.

Coat — This breed is available in both short and long coat variants— long coats are sometimes referred to as Highland Fold, Scottish Fold Longhair, or Longhair Fold.

Colours — Known to come in a great variety of colours thats include Blue, White, Cream, Calico, Tabby, Silver, Gold, Black, Tortoise Shell and Chinchilla.

Fun Fact #3      It is possible for a Scottish Fold Cat to have normal, upright ears. A dominant gene is essential for folded ears to develop— Most kittens are all born with unfolded ears, folds may start developing only after 3 to 4 weeks!

Grooming Requirements

Short Coat — Requires weekly brushing to rid loose hairs and speed up the process of shedding.

Long Coat — Increase weekly brushing to at least two or more times per week.

The unique folded ears of a Scottish Fold is naturally more prone to wax build-up, frequently check their ears and clean them out with a Vet-approved ear cleaner and cotton ball(s). Other grooming needs includes nail trimming whenever necessary☺

Temperament And Personality Of A Scottish Fold

Answering the initial query, you’d be pleased to know that the adorable outlook isn’t just for show—  the common disposition with this breed is that of a sweet-nature. The love for human affection puts them close-by most of the time. Highly adaptable in different environments, a Scottish Fold do great with children, crowds and even other Pets in the household.

Their sweetness has no end, with tiny soft voices and their natural disposition of laying on their backs, sitting upright with legs akimbo or front legs aloofly rested on their tummies. On a regular day, kitty-curiousity renders a Scottish Fold to stand up— like a Meerkat! These Cats love a good tease and challenging toys that tickle their intelligence.

They do not appreciate being neglected, an important factor you should seriously consider before obtaining one. Cleaning And Disinfecting Your Pet’s Bed Efficiently: Why You Ought To And How You Can!

Cleaning Up Your Pet's Bed More Effectively With These Tips!

Pet health and hygiene at home goes beyond food and grooming as we take a closer look at ways we can create a better living environment for our Pets— cleaning and disinfecting their beds. This responsibility not only applies to Dogs and Cats, smaller Pet types such as Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Chinchillas, even Birds too!

Cleaning of their bowls and accessories should be part of a daily routine, discover quick methods and steps of easing up that process here.

Just How Dirty Can My Pet's Bed Get?

Like us, our Furkids come in contact with potential bacteria every single day, the only difference is that we have better knowledge to efficiently clean ourselves up. It's high time to give your Pets a hand with that— here are a few questions to address to understand the importance of properly cleaning their beds:

  • Does your Pet shed a lot?
  • How frequent do you take them out for a walk?
  • Does your Pet drool excessively?
  • Do they have current allergies or skin issues?
  • How quickly does dust accumulate at home?

Bacteria, germs, diseases and harmful pathogens can be carried through many ways, such as vomit, saliva, urine, faeces, any other form of discharge and even hair/fur. These are potential nesting grounds for a lot of bacteria— Regular washing enables easier and more efficient removal of these pathogens. Since regular grooming is already an essential part to having a pet, why let the cleaning effort go to waste when you can ensure that they are turning in for a good night’s rest on a fresh clean bed☺

1. Vacuuming

To start off, you can include vacuuming your Pet’s bed in your weekly home cleaning regime, especially for Pets that shed a lot— Clumps and clusters of hair and fur get stuck in and on their beds!

Hot Tip #1      A good quality vacuum can even come with brush-heads of excellent assistance in picking up Pet hair on fabric.

2. Lint-Rolling

A good roll-over with a lint-roller or tape can also quickly get the job done! Additionally, this gets rid of dust, and the chances of them swallowing their own fur is greatly reduced.

3. Choosing A Suitable Pet Bed

This can be tricky, there are too many adorable designs! Your Pet’s unique preference(s) might come first, but we should also consider if it is laundry-safe. For example, a Pet bed with removable covers that allows washing would be ideal— you can easily chuck the covers into a washer for a good rinse. A bed with non-removable covers on the other hand, would require a much longer time to dry after rinsing.

4. Disinfecting With High Heat

The advised temperature to successfully kill any harmful pathogens is 60°C to 70°C (140°F to 158°F).
  • Pre-soak bed covers in boiling water and Pet-friendly detergent.
  • Opt for an even natural cleaning agent like Distilled White Vinegar instead.
  • Soak for at least one hour
  • Rinse thoroughly with water
  • For laundry-friendly fabrics, pop them in the washer!

Hot Tip #2      Avoid using bleach and fabric softeners, bleach is harmful if not properly washed and ingested by your Pets, and fabric softeners could be really tough on their sensitive noses.

5. Drying Methods

Using a Dryer is one efficient way to dry any permissible material, but for those of us that do not have one available at home, the Sun is your best friend! Fresh, sunned-out laundry not only smells great, it further depletes any remaining bacteria. Now you can ensure your Pet has a clean and dry bed ready on the very same day of washing☺

Don’t forget to give their beds a good spritz of Pet-friendly disinfectants and air out before you usher your Furkids in.

Hot Tip #3      During seasons where you can’t be too sure of rain or shine, swing by a Laundromat and pop your laundry into a Dryer for a spin!

Happy Cleaning!

Chew toys have multi-purposes. Not only are they meant for play time and, chew toys are handy tools to keep your Doggos properly entertained when you are busy with something in the house. One such toy is a Kong— a simple rubberized toy with a hollowed out compartment for delicious treats, even a slab of peanut butter. It's not all fun and games, brain stimulation goes on while your Doggo(s) try to figure out how to get to their treats by gnawing and licking.

2. Brushing Teeth With Toys

Certain Dogs may give their owners a tougher time when it comes to brushing teeth. Nonetheless, dental and oral hygiene is essential to keep their teeth in good shape till a ripe old age. Struggling in getting your pooch to cooperate? Rub some Vet-approved toothpaste on their toys (i.e. rubber or rope).
simple tricks for every dog owner

Fun Tip #2      Pick toys preferably with grooves or tiny knobby surfaces. These help scrape some dirt off their tongues and teeth, keeping their breaths fresh too! On top of all that, don’t forget to pop by a trusted Vet for a routined dental check!

3. Greens For Good Breath

While we're on the topic of oral hygiene, add this nifty hack for fresher breath. It's no news that breath freshening treats contain herbs like parsley and/or mint— pop in some finely-chopped fresh parsley or mint into your pooch's food, and freshen up their breaths while they chomp away during meal times!

4. Recycle An Old T-Shirt

Clearing up some wardrobe space? Don't throw your old clothes away, donate them to the needy. At the same time, save a few old t-shirts (preferably those with stretchy material)— make these into a braided rope toy.

Steps:
  • Give your tees a good wash and dry before cutting them up into strips
  • Braid 3 strips with two knotted ends for a tug-o-war toy!

Fun Tip # 3      Don’t throw the remainder away, make more braided toys and replace old tattered ones anytime!

5. Reuse Squeeze Bottles

As responsible and considerate Dog owners, we should pickup and dispose of any excrement from our Dogs while outdoors. A bottle of water comes in handy to wash away urine or poo stains, but a squeeze bottle gives added pressure for a quicker and more efficient cleanse!

Steps:
  • Recycle squeeze bottles (for chilli sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, or maple syrup etc.)
  • Wash them with soap and water thoroughly.
  • Fill it up with water, and strap them along for your next Dog walk or outdoor activity with your Doggo.

Fun Tip #4      Pick squeezy bottles with a secure cap to avoid water-spilage. Better yet if it has a handle, for ease of carrying about!

6. Vaseline On Paws

Damage to a Dog's delicate and sensitive paw pads is something that might go unnoticed. That is also why Dog shoes are invented (not just a fashion statement)— not all Doggos are used to wearing shoes. We use Vaseline for prevention of blisters and abrasions, and it works wonders for our Canine companions too.
  • Apply a small amount of Vaseline underneath each paw pad just before heading out

Fun Tip #5      Rinse off as per norm when you are home, checking to make sure no dirt is stuck in between or on them☺

7. Buy Carabiners

Yet another multi-purpose tool, Carabiners are perfect for attaching items to a Dog leash, and/or combining two leashes together. Another great usage example is how we could keep one on our Doggo’s leash at all times— free up your hands by fastenening the leash to ourselves or a stationary object anytime with a simple loop technique like such:

To avoid theft or harm, never leave your Dog(s) alone and unattended to for long periods of time, it’s not safe!

8. Slow Down Food Intake

Got a furry fast eater at home? Improve your furchild's disgestion by getting a slow-feeder bowl, or save a few bucks just by popping a tennis ball into their bowls. Although, this would work best with a big bowl— big enough to fit a tennis ball and also leave some space around for the Doggos to reach in. This results in a longer time to reach for pieces of kibble, and also smaller intakes with each bite☺

9. Baking Soda And White Vinegar

Baking Soda is an effective cleaning ageant to have in anyone's home, with other uses like facial aid and cooking. Cleaning up your Pet's accidental mess like urine or poo calls for a thorough cleaning with baking soda and vinegar.

  • Rub in baking soda on the stained area
  • Pour white vinegar and allow to dry
  • Vacuum the remaining baking soda right up
