The American Shorthair Cat: The Breed With More Than Eighty Colour Variations!

A Cat breed most represented and best known by one coat colouration, the Silver Tabby. However what most of us aren't aware of is this little know fact— the American Shorthair has in fact more than eighty variations in colour, coat and patterns. These Cats are also one of America's most common domestic breed.☺

History has it that these kitties are the very descendants of Cats that rode ships with sailors and pilgrims, most valued for their innate capabilities of hunting rats on-board these ships. They weren't just popular in the seas, they even made a name for themselves amongst Farmers and Shopkeepers— keeping the vermin away from crops and food supply, especially during times of turmoil.

These hardworking Cats were all known as Domestic Shorthairs back then.
During the 20th century, a selective breeding program commenced in attempt to established strict breed standards and its best traits. To differentiate the Pedigreed breed from other Domestic Shorthair, the carefully bred Cats were renamed the American Shorthair in 1966.

Appearance Of The American Shorthair

American Shorthair Cats are larger than their British counterparts (British Shorthairs), with robust, muscular bodies and rounder face. Accompanied by a dense short coat and large round eyes, males are know to be larger than females.

Grooming Requirements

These Cats have minimal shedding, but to rid loose hairs and keep their short dense coats smooth and shiny, run through with a brush or curry comb once every week. Trim their nails whenever necessary, and brush their teeth with a Vet approved toothpaste to maintain good oral hygiene. If you are unsure how to perform these tasks, please approach a trusted Groomer or Veterinarian for professional advice and demonstration!

Personality Of The American Shorthair Cat

You can expect an American Shorthair Cat to be friendly, affectionate and ready for a good cuddle-time in your arms or lap. However calm they might be at times, it is also important to know that these are extremely curious and playful felines.
