Shetland Sheepdog: Are Shelties Miniature Versions Of A Rough Collie?

Sheltie Dog History, Intelligence, Temperament and Care Tips!

Shetland Sheepdogs may not be the as well-known around the world as compared to other Dog breeds, but this does little to change the fact that they are still very much loved by many. Perhaps we might have even mistaken Shetland Sheep Dogs for a Collie— ever wondered why this "Collie" seems so much smaller in size?

Fun Fact #1      The Shetland Sheepdog breed was given the name Shetland Collie initially. Today, they are also known as Sheltie for short.

Shetland Sheepdog

Shelties are a breed of Dog from the Shetland Islands in Scotland best known for purpose with herding. While they were originally given the name Shetland Collie in the past, this caused a long standing dispute with Rough Collie breeders— which brought about the change of the breed's name to Shetland Sheepdog, as we know of today. Understandably, it wasn't just because the names were clashing, Shetland Sheepdogs looked remarkably similar to Rough Collies too. Shelties like other animals from Shetland Islands (i.e. Ponies and Sheeps), were bred to cope and withstand against the harsh weather conditions on the islands.

Fun Fact #2      The OG sheep-herding Shetland dogs were regarded as a Spitz-type dog. They no longer exist as their jobs were taken over by Border Collies.

via KyleandKodi on Tumblr
Although the animals are miniatures of their own kind, Shetland Sheepdogs are not a smaller version to the Rough Collie. The original "concoction" is still shrouded in mystery— breeds involved included the Scottish Collie, King Charles Spaniel, Pomeranian and also the much rumoured Border Collie. Only much later were small Rough Collies added to the equation by James Loggie, contributing to the Sheltie version we see today. In 1909, the Shetland Sheepdog breed got recognized by the EKC (English Kennel Club), and in 1911, by the AKC (American Kennel Club).

Fun Fact #3      Did you know, the modern Shetland Sheepdog we know of today is uncommon in their native lands? Interestingly, they are also not used for sheep-herding purposes!

What Does A Shetland Sheepdog Look Like?

From mere photographs of individual breeds, its is rather inevitable to mistake a Sheltie for a Rough Collie and sometimes, colour variations can have them confused with other breeds like the Border Collie, and even the Australian Shepherd Dog.

How do you tell a Sheltie from a Rough Collie if they look so similar?

Sheltie Size — A Shetland Sheepdog is a small Dog breed. In size comparison itself, the Rough Collie is way larger than a Sheltie— also the reason why Shelties are thought of as a miniature version of the Rough Collie.
Size comparison of a Sheltie and Rough Collie
Left: Sheltie Right: Rough Collie — via Wikipedia

  • Sheltie — Average weight 5 to 11 kgs, standing 33 to 41cm tall.
  • Rough Collie — Average weight 22 to 31 kgs, standing 55 to 66 cm tall.

Sheltie Features — Double coat made up of a soft undercoat, and rough guard hairs above. Bushy plush tails hang low most of the time, and are only lifted when alert or excited. Only Blue Merle Shelties may have Blue eyes, or Odd-eyes (one Blue, one Dark), all other Sheltie colour variations have brown or dark eyes.

Fun Fact #4      The double coat of a Sheltie is useful in all weather conditions— rough guard hairs are water-resistant, while the soft undercoat provides just the right insulation.

Sheltie Colours — Sable, Tri-colour and Blue Merle are three colour variations of Shetland Sheepdogs. These variations can range from Brown shades to Golden and even Reddish-brown with White and/or Tan. Predicting how much White will appear on a Sheltie is not as simple as breeding two Shelties with minimal White— a coloured variant Pup is possible between two predominantly White Shetland Sheepdogs too.

Fun Fact #5      Shelties with more than 50% White on their coats do not fair well in scoring at Dog shows, lesser White is much preferred with Judges for breed standards.

Grooming A Sheltie

The beautiful plush coat of a Shetland Sheepdog sheds quite substaintially. Grooming maintenance requires copius brushing and combing, preferably 2 to 3 times per week— soft undercoats are prone to matting, pay closer attention to areas around the joints, ears, neck and tail.

How to groom a Sheltie
via SheltieBeauties on Blogger
Trim their nails so they do not get too long and start clacking on floors, and swab out dirt build-up in the ears and around the eyes with a dog-friendly cleanser and cotton balls if necessary. To keep your Sheltie's coat healthy and ease up your grooming efforts, visit a professional Groomer at least once every one or two months.

HOT TIP      Owners are advised not to opt for shaving— once shaved, the coat of a Sheltie may not regrow as smoothly to it's original state. Shaving is also reported to be harmful for their skin.

Shetland Sheepdog Personality and Temperament

Known as one of the most loyal and ranked highly for intellegence, Shelties fair really well with training and are often top choices in competions involving agility and obedience. Walks and playtime keeps a Sheltie feeling happy and purposeful. Active, playful, and loving, Shelties are also favourites to families.
Shetland Sheepdog temperament
via KyleandKodi on Tumblr
It almost seems like there isn't anything a Shetland Sheepdog can't provide as a companion— they're make great therapy Dogs too! Topped off with an even temperament, they'd make a great addition to any home. With lots of love and proper care, a Sheltie's average lifespan ranges from 12 to 13 years.

Fun Fact #6      Shelties are reportedly one of the fastest at grasping a command as compared to other Dog breeds. Got a farm? Don't forget their innate ability for Sheepherding! A friend, companion and working breed is a Shetland Sheepdog ☺

Pawsitive Interactive Art Exhibition For Pets

Pawsitive Art For Wellness Tenth Anniversary

Wellness® pet food brand is celebrating their 10th Anniversary blast in conjunction with Art, and if you didn’t know, it is still ongoing at SOTA (School of the Arts)! This is a 9-day event (30th September - 8th October) organised by Silversky Pet Care is an eye-opening experience, what we’d refer to when an event constantly wows you at every turn.

Address

1 Zubir Said Drive (Level 2) Singapore 227968

Sunday - Thursday    11am to 9pm
Friday - Saturday      10am to 10pm

Interactive Art Exhibition for Pets

While most Pet events were fun and very hyped-up by event-goers and their furry companions, we’ve been spoilt for choice on a personal favourite lately with all new interesting twists to this particular event. If you are a lover of Dogs, Cats, Art, mingling and having a ball of a time with your Pets, this event must not be missed.
Animal Behaviourist
Event Entrance
Before you start assuming this is going to be a very Art-only exhibit (like we did), we should probably start off by mentioning that this is also the World’s First interactive Art exhibition for PETS.

The Dog Zone

PAWsitive had the combination of Art, Pets and their Hoomin owners in a perfect cocktail for all ages, and all Dogs and Cats. How so? Well we were lucky enough to be shown around the exhibits by Dane, the PR representative for Silversky Pet Care, whom painstakingly introduced us to the Artists on site and providing us with an informative tour! This event was thoughtfully segmented into two different spaces (rooms) for Dogs and Cats respectively, avoiding any conflict of animals.

1. Heartstrings

By Jes and Jalon

Starting off with the first Art piece, a yellow Pentagon structure greeted us with a burst of colours and dangling objects which perked us right up. Upon closer look, these were actually made out of Doggy chew toys and Tug-of-war ropes! As explained to us by artists Jes and Jalon, Heartstrings was created with the intent of providing a stress-relieving experience as owners tugged at one end, interacting with their Furkids on the other through the inter-connected ropes.
Poodle Dog breed toys
"Don't I set lovely contrast to all these colours around me?"
Fun Fact      The name Heartstrings was inspired by the bond between us and our canine companions; how they’d never fail to tug at our heart-strings, with amusing antics and undying love.

2. A Whole New World

By Adeline Tan

Up on the left was an interesting take on Walt Disney’s movie Aladdin, designed as a picture-perfect spot for Doggos and their owners. Take your pooch on a magic-carpet ride topped with sights and sounds. A kaleidoscope screen display of a Dog’s favourite treats, all whilst being accompanied by the melodic tune of the theme song A Whole New World.
Kaleidoscope Art
Swirling Meat slabs...Nomz
Fun Fact      Speakers were playing the theme song throughout this experience at this art-piece, listen out for unfathomable portions because, those are examples of sounds specially tuned to our Doggo’s hearing frequencies!

3. Peek-A-Pooch

By Jas and Jalon

A second piece by this Duo, this sculpture was inspired by the guided sense of curiosity, usually with their keen sense of smell. Get extremely amused at how Doggies would be poking their faces through these carefully cut-out holes, looking in a made-up lawn loaded with everything enticing to a Dog’s nose; Shoes, snacks, balls and toys, you name it, you got it. It’s a messy garden of all things fun to your pooch.

Source: Cheryl Lin/TODAY
Fun Fact      All the holes in Peek-a-Pooch were substantially large enough for a Dog’s head to fit through, but Jes described how adorable one Pug was, barely fitting his round face in. Talk about photo-worthy moments indeed!

4. His Master’s Voice

By Verticle Submarine

Feeling up for a challenge with your Doggo? Move on to a maze created by an Art collective, this piece is much more interactive than what meets the eye, as owners place themselves in a booth at the end of the maze and call out to their canine pals through speakers!

Can you hear me?
Fun Fact      Along your eye-level you’d see a few hanging lamps…except they’re not lamps! These are speakers strategically placed at different parts of the maze, all fully controllable by you in the booth.

5. Doggyland & 6. Woof-Roof

By Joscelin Chew

Two separate structures in a park like segment, Doggyland is a ball-pool designed for one purpose: FUN. Watch how your Doggos dive in with tail-wagging action and sharing the same amusement with fellow canine friends. P.S. We spotted children sneaking their hand through for a sweep of those colourful balls too! This ball-pool was also in the shape of a Dog bone. How apt.

More colourful balls for you!
Need a breather? Take a chill-pill with your Pooch in Woof-Roof, an adorable hut right beside Doggyland, littered with comfy bone-shaped cushions and accompanied by a tune created in collaboration with a sound artist Ng Shou Jin.

Fun Fact      The ball-pit area is scrupulously cleaned and sanitised by staffs present, even the balls were replaced with brand new ones after every session! As fellow Pet-owners, we were thoroughly impressed by this effort ☺

The Cat Zone

To be completely honest, we weren’t aware that there was a zone meant just for Cats, not until Dane mentioned it. Being already very entertained by the Dog zone, and we couldn’t wait to see how this Kitty wonderland would be. As many Cat owners would understand, our feline friends aren’t brought out of the house very often at all for safety reasons, and this art exhibition planned to provide the appropriate haven for that!

1. Deep Sea Fishing

By PAYNK

This was actually the last piece we visited, however we are writing in accordance of the recommended order by Pet behaviourists (to be explained later on). Deep Sea Fishing is an ironically-themed piece created specially for your puurrfect pals (whom aren’t great fans of water); an underwater-world experience they can comfortably enjoy! Sweet dreams, fish-lovers ☺

Fun Fact      This set-up is lovingly furnished with Bubbles (Acrylic balls hung from the ceiling fixture with enticing Catnip inside) *BloopBloop*

2. RugCats

By Soh Ee Shaun

If we love Cats, and Cats love rugs and carpets, how would it look combined together? This artist shows you exactly how with the installation of wall shelves and Cat faced rugs, enough to spoil your kitties with an awesome time of clawing, climbing, scratching and a whole lot of Catty-shenanigans.

Fun Fact    The Cat designs were inspired by the artist’s very own Cats’ expressions and appearances. These rugs were also printed with Pet-safe ink!

3. In The Cat’s Belly

By Kelly “Limerick” Lim

Undoubtedly the first installation we were drawn to, a piece as vibrant and intriguing as its creator. In The Cats’s Belly is basically a purple kitty-condo in a shape of a large Cat. With a step ladder (tongue) that brings your kitty into a wonderland of 6 differently textured rooms (belly), all carefully constructed with various yarns and knits. Have an overview of your Cats by simply opening up the hatch-top closures segmented into 3 doors, or watch them take a swat at iridescent-dangly fixtures on a mushroom (sprouted on the Cat’s back)
Neko Cafe Singapore
Wished we were Cats
Fun Fact      Think that’s all? Don’t move forward until you’ve taken a peek into each room, you’d find quirky entertainment meant just for your Cats and a detachable fuzzy, feathered tail. Yep, you’d think we’re sounding a little crazy, but we’re saying, it is crazy-FUN.

4. Hide & Seek

By Vertical Submarine

Another number by art collective Vertical Submarine, Hide & Seek is a massive structure that encourages hunting simulations for a Cat with a touch of chase. Mounted with clear-top acrylic, kitties can have a bird’s eye view of movements within these long and zaggy fixtures. Tiny holes are cut out in random locations, big enough to fit a paw for Felines to take a swing or jab at mouse-like toys controlled by none other than you.
Tom and Jerry
A whole lotta' Cheese!
Fun Fact      This installation is inspired by MGM Studios infamous animated duo Tom & Jerry (Cat and Mouse characters), which explains the cheese layout.

How To Enjoy The Exhibit To Its Fullest

The good folks at Silversky Pet Care had this event carefully thought out and planned with their various team of experts, made up of Veterinarians and Behaviourists. The listing order for these installations were recommended to provide the best experience with utmost brain stimulation and fun, so be sure to follow through with the order if you can! ☺

Basic Rules To Follow

As part of creating a safe environment for all our Furkids and humans, a pre-registration at the door or online allocates owners a 90 minute time slot. A prior reminder 15 minutes before the end of your allocated time slot will be provided. Why You Should Visit This Exhibit

This was the first interactive exhibition with Arts and Pets for us. It was truly inspiring to see just how much bonding there was between event-goers and their furry companions. Having the chance to meet the various friendly Artists and Staff (Special thanks to Dane, Howard and Esmond) was nothing short of pure exuberance.

Films With Pets And Animals: The Best Movies Of The Past And Present

Films With Pets And Animals: The Best Movies Of The Past And Present

Movies or films are great for recreational purposes, and we judge them by how they make us feel emotionally. The moment when story lines send electric waves through our brains, triggering thoughts and emotions that leave a lasting impression as you reflect on life itself.
Do you remember some childhood favourites?

Most of which consisted of Pets and Animals! Watching them again when we’re older proved that these movies were not just entertaining, they often teach us life lessons on friendship, trust, and of course, love. We round up some of the best films with Pets and Animals, from the past and present years!

Films With Real Life Characters

A lot of these movies were made starring Dogs as one of its plot characters, we would imagine it’s because being able to respond to commands on set is just one of the requisites. Naturally, these Dogs were always accompanied by trainers, and even body-doubles for different scenes. Can you fathom how chaotic it would it if noPawdie was well trained? *Gasp*

Beethoven (1992)

The adorable story of how a family discovers the joy and troubles of Pet ownership after adopting a St.Bernard’s puppy. Things take a turn for the worse when a mad scientist decides to kidnap Beethoven for crazy experimental purposes!

Homeward Bound : The Incredible Journey (1993)

A remake of the 1963 film, this film has the combination of two Dogs (an American Bulldog and A Golden Retriever), and a Cat!  Join their amusing yet scary journey of loyalty and friendship when their owners dropped them off at ranch before going on a vacation. Now that’s one smart and loyal Collie.

AirBud (1997)

This film has received disputed reviews, most of which referred to how false it was. But if you watch closely, it carefully depicts how a stray Golden-retriever changes a Boy’s life by bringing him more confidence and joy, especially after his father’s recent death. All with the touch of some friendship, trust and basketball! A feel-good movie is what it is.

101 Dalmatians (1996)

This is a love story of how two Dalmatians found each other through their owners marrying (The Dogs got married too) Happily ever after comes with a twist when their litter of 99 puppies were kidnapped by an evil woman on a cruel mission to produce a coat made out of the puppies fur. Watch how they plan their massive escape (because parents would do anything for their children). Nobody can forget the classic look of Cruella De Vil’s hair.

Little Heroes (1999)

A comedy flick on courage, friendship and loyalty, involving a family and their two very intelligent Dogs. Cats & Dogs (2001)

A Dog’s Purpose (2017)

Get ready your tissues as you watch this film, follow the reincarnations of a Dog five times and experience the many emotions and lives he/she had to live through. Films With Other Animals

Though we might not be able to own a lot of animals as Pets, wouldn’t it be nice to experience the possibilities through the screen? From Farms to Zoos and the big open seas, the cinema has a few amazing ones to remind you that animals have feelings too, and who says you can’t bond with them?

Free Willy (1993)

A classic movie for many (do you remember how almost everyone was wearing a Free Willy T-shirt?). Watch how a deep friendship unfolds as a recently orphaned boy named Jesse bonds with a young Orca Whale facing similar separation problems while living at a foster home. Things don’t go as smoothly as they thought when a nasty theme park owner tries to profit off their relationship. Catch the touching scene as Jesse helps Willy (the whale) escape into the sea and reunite with his family. *Que majestic whale leap*

From a novel to screen, Black Beauty is a story of how a magnificent black Stallion was brought up by very kind folks from young, and eventually forced to work pulling a taxi carriage. Follow this working Horse’s hardships and sufferings before finding himself in loving care again after a tiring life. This is an accurate example of how Animals and Pets do not have the luxury of choosing the lifestyles they want indeed!

Ace Ventura : Pet Detective (1994)

You have got to know this one! Action-comedy maestro Jim Carrey plays Ace Ventura, a Pet detective scouring the country answering to the public’s needs. Lost pet? Fear not, Ace has got you covered. Follow his adventures with pet Capuchin monkey (Spike) and watch him as he uses much unorthodox methods to uncovering mysteries of missing Pets and animals. Oh yes, he speaks their language, very well.

  Babe (1995)

In life, we face social hierarchy at home and at work, but who’s to say animals don’t face the same? This movie convinces you otherwise as Babe (the little piggy in the movie) learn things the hard way in a farm. From being a prize at a fair, almost becoming the farmer’s dinner, making new friends, to eventually learning his way and convincing the rest of how capable a little piggy can be. Touching, inspiring, and amusing! Did we mention they could all speak as well?!
