Why Visit A Cat Cafe?

Cat cafes are indeed a great option for avid Cat lovers who don’t own Cats due to certain constraints or personal reasons. Perhaps food and beverage isn’t one of their strongest traits (pretty decent stuff no less), just don’t go expecting Michelin Star rated food. But it warms our hearts knowing some these once abandoned Cats have found good homes and are undeniably well taken care of .

What you can be guaranteed of is a pleasurable, fuzzy and knowledgeable experience, sure to calm your senses— Psst, keep your eyes peeled for exotic breeds!

Hot Tip      Please note of the different age restrictions for the various Cafes, and no pets of your own are allowed within all the Cat Cafes listed above, Cafe owners would like to maintain the safety of their Cats and patrons alike.

**All of the above stated rates are up to date, but please do drop the cafes a call to reconfirm the pricing. Any changes in prices are completely subjected to the Cafe's rights.

An Inspiring Moment For All

For the safety of a cafe's own kitties, no. Also, it is advisable to keep your Cats indoors, given recent Cat-killing incidents, and Cats falling to their deaths. These Cat Cafes are perfect places to get some inspiration and tips of keeping your Cats perpetually entertained and safe indoors!

And from the looks of these Cat Cafes, can we just quote the wise words of Sheldon Cooper — “Meowow” :3

Popular Cat Cafes You Can Absolutely Visit In Jakarta

Popular Cat Cafes You Can Absolutely Visit In Jakarta

Are you a huge fan of Pets and animals? Then you must have heard of Pet cafes and their therapeutic means of providing warm fuzzy love for its patrons. In Singapore itself, there is no denying the fact that our people value the voices of animals and we love spending a little extra time cuddling and doing activities with our furry and feathered companions.

Warm homey feeling!
As of now, we have four Cat cafes, one Dog café, and six Pet friendly places you can bring your Doggos to and find a menu available for Dogs. In case you were wondering, there are nifty little joints like such while you are overseas too!

Are Pets cafes in other countries any different?

We took a trip to Indonesia last month, to take a look at the situations and lifestyles of Pets and animals in a whole different environment. When one thinks of Indonesia, Jakarta comes to mind, as the busy capital for business, and a place that has a bustling infrastructure like Singapore.

With Tokiopedia (Indonesia’s biggest online marketplace for Entrepreneurs and small businesses) receiving its latest funding round, the booming Tech-industry is sure looking up and promising! Continuing our Indonesia trip series in this very article is a visit to not one, but two Cat cafes in Jakarta, Indonesia. Read on to experience our sights and full review of our experiences with these Cat cafes!

Oh hello!

The Cat Cabin

Jakarta is basically Singapore, a metropolis with tall buildings and a ton of traffic. If you thought the traffic was bad here, wait till you get to Jakarta. Getting from point A to B (of short distances) was much more different than in Yogyakarta. The first Cat café we visited was in the hub of Malls, marketplaces and younger crowd (think Orchard Road).

Finding The Cat Cabin

We got here by a local Taxi this time, wanting to test out the rates. In Yogya, we travelled around mostly by GoJek, our go-to means of transport in Indonesia, alike to Uber and Grab. We most definitely recommend this app as a form of getting around Indonesia (Read more on why we prefer GoJek in our upcoming final article). Our destination brought us to a 3 storey Black building with The Cat Cabin’s sign visible on the side.

Cat on Sofa
It was a quiet little building with very little windows and no entrance, plus the sign was a little tough to spot, but we caught a few local girls heading up a flight of stairs and we thought, “It must be up there!” Based on our prior research, The Cat Cabin is located on the 2nd floor. As you head up a small flight of stairs to the 2nd floor, you should see the cafe entrance on your left!

What To Expect

Greeted by a glass door with vinyl decal that pictured the Café’s logo, silhouette of a Black Cat with the words The Cat Cabin, we knew we were at the right place. From the glass door you could see through to the Café’s interior of different Cat-friendly structures and wooden theme, much like Cats and Coffee in Yogya.

My eyes seem to be this way all the time
The Cat Cabin was much more brightly lit, soaking up light from its full length windows and a good location. Upon entering you will see shoe racks with rubber sandals decorated with Cat related decals on them, and an order counter.

Notice Board
Patrons are required to remove their shoes and slip into a pair of rubber sandals. Pick a pair that fits you well and leave your shoes on the racks. While swapping out our shoes for sandals, there was a notice board that was hung behind provided seats, displaying a cute photo introduction to the feline hosts that are in the Café, inclusive of their names and breeds! The board also had notices for adoption drives and event booking enquiries. Missing Cat in the area? Drop a flyer off with The Cat Cabin and these folks would be more than happy to pin it up for you ☺

Rules Of The Cat Cabin

Pasted right above the shoe racks are the house rules patrons have got to abide by, nothing too absurd, these rules basically stated:

No Flash photography

No disturbing of Cats while they sleep, light petting is allowed

No feeding of human food

No pulling of Cats’ tails

Approach Café Staff for help if you are not too sure how to hold a Cat (but would love to)

Children under 5 years old must be accompanied by an adult

Rates And Charges

If you read our article on Cats and Coffee in Yogya, you’d notice the surprising fact that there was no entry fee, normally charged by the hour (yes most of our local Cat Cafes charges that way too). For The Cat Cabin, the charges are as follows:

(Entry) First Hour – RP 60,000 Weekday, RP 70,000 Weekend
Subsequent hours – RP 50,000

Cat cafe tourism tip
Welcome!
We’d say we were in luck, because the Café was running a special promotion at the time, with two beverages to choose from, Unicorn Tears and Lavender Latte. Purchasing either drink waives off the first hour charge, entitled to one drink per person. Naturally, we took the deal, which surmounted up to about RP 80,000 for 2 individuals, one drink each!

What else do they serve at The Cat Cabin?

Menu

Quite frankly we weren’t expecting much variety, as we’ve mentioned before, don’t be expecting a wide spread of delicacies at Pet Cafes because patrons are mostly there for a session of furry love! However, we must say that The Cat Cabin’s menu had quite an array of Food and Beverages:

Coffee
Sodas
Milkshakes
Italian cuisine of pastas
Dons (Japanese Rice with ingredients)
Indonesian rice specialties

The Cat Cabin menu
Do you spot the Cake Jars?
Not forgetting desserts for the ladies, pick your preferred cake form, in slices, or in jars ☺ Prices for individual food and beverage choices range from RP 25,000 to RP 40,000 each (approximately SGD 2.50 to 4), you can’t get these rates in Singapore we must say!

The Cats

The café is a hit with the local girls, already having a ball of a time cuddling and snapping photographs with the Cats. It was a nice change of pace this time, because most of the Kitty hosts were up and moving about. Can we also add that, they were all beautiful and friendly?! Here at The Cat Cabin, they have a range of Maine Coons, Persians and Local Cats, all nicely groomed and clean.

Hi there!I'm awake and ready to play
The café was spacious enough to house a large table, smaller cosy seating areas with cushions and even a smorgasbord of Cat condos. Where we sat stood the tiniest little door frame. Peeking in, we spotted a private eating area and litter boxes for the Cats to make their escape, dine and relieve!

Was It Worth The Trip?

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, with a good dosage of kitty love. The Café was clean and our feline hosts were friendly and sociable, and the café staff were also friendly and attentive. There seemed to be no room for boredom here at The Cat Cabin, as they’ve also considerately included shelves with a myriad of books to choose from, ranging from all things Cat and also fictional favourite.

Feel like entertaining your feline hosts in return? Pick a toy from the shelves and play with them for a good round of kitty brain stimulation! This is truly a space for Cat lovers, by Cat lovers. We left for our next destination feeling relaxed and very much loved. Definitely pop by when you are in Jakarta!

The Other Cat Café In Jakarta

Located nearby in Jalan Kemang Raya was Cutie Cats Café, in which was a little hard to find due to its very washed out sign up front. Again, this was a Cat Café located on the 2nd floor of a building, with a narrow walkway that led to stairs and up to the Café itself. Note: walkway and stairs were part of the café.

Cutie Cats Café

We noticed that there were two Cutie Cats Café, one located in Jalan Kemang Raya, and a pop-up cafe within Lippo Mall itself. Both of which were much smaller than the other Cat Cafes we’ve been to in Yogya and Jarkata, however they did display a lot of exotic Persians and long haired Beauties. First impressions? All of our feline hosts seemed very well fed and sleepy. Since we have sniffed out quite a couple of bad reviews on their Facebook and TripAdvisor, we were very curious indeed. Time for a little sniffing.

What We Experienced

Unfortunately we had a tough time conversing with the staff due to language barrier (a common encounter while we were in Indonesia), but at these two outlets it was even tougher as no one spoke English. It was made even harder when they tried to ignore us. The most we found out was the entry fee of RP 80,000 ++ per hour, the highest rate we’ve came across.

We decided to give it a pass after trying for 10 minutes, at both locations! Well, we tried. In conclusion we would say that Cutie Cats Cafe at both venues were clean, judging from the counter area and Cafe ground. Space seemed a little cramped, and they do serve Food and Drinks. We are unable to obtain any further details, also their website is still a template, nothing is maintained nor updated.

Are There Cat Cafes Worth The Visit In Yogyakarta?

Are There Cat Cafes Worth The Visit In Yogyakarta?

ThePetsDialogue was in Indonesia this month with a mission at hand, to sniff out the situation of animals and Pets, in a whole new environment and culture. In case you were wondering, our sunny island Singapore is not the only country to introduce Cafes with a touch of fur lovin’, and this trend has been sprouting overseas too! Pet cafes have long served therapeutic means for us human to unwind with friends and family, with the company of Feline or Canine Pals.

Cat cafes in Indonesia
Cats and Coffee Yogya
Thus begins this series of experiences we had in Indonesia, and our first stop was in Yogyakarta, also commonly referred to as Yogya or Jogja for short. Yogya is a cultural and historical spot in Indonesia so rich in tradition, with the streets now littered with tourists. Thankfully the slow-paced, (slightly back-dated) quiet life of locals have not changed preserving the way of living such as food stalls on wheels and massive street basking. For the fact that the only animals we came across were very skinny stray Cats and a bird or Rooster in every home, it sparked our curiosity even further…

What are the Cat Cafes In Yogyakarta like?

Cats and Coffee

Upon our research beforehand on the locations of these Cat cafes, there were just two possible venues, and to our dismay one of which has already closed down (stay tuned for the name of that Cat Café). Fortunately for us, there was still one other location, Cats and Coffee!
cats and coffee Yogyakarta Indonesia
Source
Located slightly off North of Yogya, these streets were away from the tourist hot spots (which was quite a good break for us) and near to a couple of Universities. Surprisingly enough, the roads were a little cleaner, buildings had proper structure and we spotted a few sneaker and skate shops that reminded us of home ☺

Finding The Café

We got there by GoJek, a very popular form of Uber or Grab like transport service in Indonesia with incredible rates to boot (we will elaborate further as we uncover our Indonesia trip series) and we almost missed the place! As we alighted and stood there in the streets, figuring out which shop house it could be, turning around only to see an ENORMOUS sign that read Cats and Coffee, in graffiti style.
Are there cat cafes in other countries?
You can't miss this graffiti sign
There was a simple seating area with motorcycle parking for resting or catching a quick smoke (no smoking in a Pet Café please!) prior to entering the Café. Peek a little closer into the slightly tinted windows and you can see the nicely furnished Café and its Feline hosts. Granted that it was a weekday and around 3pm (that’s 4pm in Singapore time), that café had two small groups of local patrons.

What To Expect

As you enter the first door, you will be greeted by a shoe rack on the right to place your shoes, hand sanitizer, and a list of rules stated on the second door. These rules were pretty mandatory and basic, meant for the safety of its Feline hosts and human patrons, even a 5 year old child could abide.
The rules include :

Sanitising hands before entry
No petting when Cat is eating or asleep
No photography with flash
No disturbing of Cat 's head with an object
No pulling of Cat's tail
No squeezing of Cat

Cats n Coffee Cafe other countries
Basic rules to abide before entering the Cat cafe.
So we left our shoes on the racks, cleaned our hands up, and headed on inside. Oh yes, you are allowed to wear your socks inside. The Café had a rustic wooden vibe you’d find in most Hipster cafes, with art on the walls that we could only presume was done up personally by the owners or staff of the Café. The kitchen and counter are separated from the cats with a half partition swing door.

Rates And Charges

The shop was lit only with spotlights, making it seem a little gloomy. We approached the main counter to get ourselves a beverage and check out the rates, most of our local Cat Cafes have entry fees that go on hourly basis, i.e. $15 for the first hour, and $5 for subsequent hours. To our pleasant surprise, there was no entry fee here, purchasing a drink or snack entitles you to stay on as long as you’d like, cuddling and petting Kitties to your heart’s content.

Menu

It wasn’t a very extensive menu, like everyone would say, “Never head to a Pet Café and expect a 5-star meal”. Because the focus of Pet cafes aren’t exactly their food, they are simply providing a therapeutic session for humans to be around furry companions, while being able to enjoy simple beverage or snack!

Cat cafes in other countries
Order your Food and Drinks here!
Cats and Coffee’s menu had an array of Juices, Iced or Hot Coffee and fried finger food like Fries and Wedges. Glad to say that their coffee wasn’t half bad, decent latte (with milk froth), this was a nice highlight because the locals enjoy their coffee as it is, simple, without the use of fancy coffee machines. Prices on the menu were really affordable, you could score a nice cup of Latte at about RP 28,000.

The Cats In The Café

On to the stars of the Café, which was only about 4 Cats, and mostly mixed except for a Peke faced short hair. The Café had 2 window corner spots laid with carpet, bean bags and a small table, and 2 other tables with a long sofa chairs on one side, and chairs on the opposite side. Cats are kept entertained with ceiling instalments for climbing and resting, a peek-a-boo floor structure, and wooden interior furnishing.

Cat Cafes In Other Countries
Feeding spot and a row of private potty huts
Cats also had individual tiny huts to do their business in private near the back door. It could be due to the hot weather, and because the Café is nicely air conditioned, most of our Feline hosts were lazing around. Some of them were also pretty shy, so we only got our share of giving them some stroking whenever we could, because we wouldn’t wanna stress them out.
Tabby Cat cafe Indonesia Review
Pretty but shy young Tabby here.

Was It Worth The Trip?

The Cafe is a nicely designed space to give patrons a homey feel, plus the coffee wasn’t half bad (we really enjoy a cuppa). We understand that this isn’t a petting-zoo, hence we shouldn’t be forcing or expecting the Cats to do anything. One of the rules entailed no touching while they are eating (understandable), so there wasn’t much to do except wait. However we must say that we were quite disappointed with the lack of Cats in the Café, especially after getting a sneak peek via Instagram and Facebook. There should have been a lot more beautiful and sociable kitty hosts.
Cats are known to sleep alot, and maybe We came at nap time...

Where did all the other Cats go?

Cats and Coffee Cafe Yogyakarta Review
Please come back another time...
We decided to make a move and leave for our next destination. That was when we stumbled into the mystery of why there were only 4 cats on the Café floor. Through the door at the back of the Café is where the toilet is, and we were greeted by cages and cages of Cats there were, snoozing or meowing at us. So that’s where they were!

Cats and Coffee Cat Cafe Yogya
The wooden interiors and Cat furniture of the Cafe

All in all, Cats and Coffee offers a very attractive price range for Food and Beverages with no entry charge. Believe it or not, we spent about RP 60,000 there for two beverages (that’s approximately SGD 6.70). As for the experience, we got our hopes high for more Cats, judging from photographs on social media, but got a little let down in the end. In conclusion, it was still good getting some company from Cats and enjoying time away from the tourist buzz. If you love Cats, and you’re dizzy from the noise and populated streets of Yogya, you could escape to Cats and Coffee for a little peace and quiet while you are in Yogya for sure!

The above address is where Miaw Shake Cat Café used to be, and while their Instagram page’s last post was in 2015, their Facebook page has already been taken down. Shop was also not found. What a pity, it seemed like they had an array of Cats like Norwegian Forests and the likes of it.
