Pet Guppy Or Hobby: The Local Aquatic Community

Pet Guppy Or Hobby: The Local Aquatic Community

Do you recall bringing a favourite Goldfish, or Guppy for your class’s Show-and-Tell while others brought hamsters or rabbits? Some of us still do. Perhaps the norm is to regard a creature of a much longer lifespan as a Pet, but what about the ones that only have a short time with you— Are they considered Pets too?
Guppy Competition Singapore

Guppy Fiesta By Guppy Club Singapore

Chancing upon the Aquatic sector at Pet Expo was quite an eye opener, so having an opportunity to visit a Guppy contest by specific was something we could not miss. This local competition was organized by none other than the Guppy Club Singapore— yes, true blue appreciators of the Guppy species. We had to learn more.
Held twice a year annually, Guppy Fiesta can consist of participants from Singapore, and overseas. Because this event was meant for local participants, it was a small scaled one, held within Home65 (a massive furniture store) A cozy corner of what seemed like a, aquarium store, filled with 6 racks of 4 rows back to back— shelved tiny portable tanks with pairs of Guppies in them.

What Is So Special About Guppies?

If you were thinking these Guppies are the regular, run-of-the-mill ones you’d find at the wet market store, think again. Not only are these Guppies different, they are selectively bred to achieve specific, unique looks. From colouration, size, to physical attributes such as elongated tails and patterns. Let’s just say if you’re a fan of intricate details— you’d be in for quite a treat.

How Guppies Are Judged

Once Guppies are categorized in their own types— Solid, Bi-colour, Variegated, Lace/Snakeskin, Sword Caudal, Short Caudal and Open, their tanks will be placed together with other Guppy pairs of the similar category. Thereafter, they will be judged according to:
Fish Competition Singapore

Body — 25 points
Dorsal — 30 points
Caudal (tail) — 35 points
Deportment (behavior) — 5 points
Health — 5 points
Quality of Female — minus 5 points if quality is not acceptable

Why Guppies make good pets

* Body, Dorsal and Caudal are awarded points according to Size, Shape, Colour and Contrast for all three segments

Do Enthusiasts Regard Guppies As Pets?

After learning that the average lifespan of a Guppy is about a year or less, we couldn’t help but wonder if enthusiasts regard these tiny finned creatures as Pets, or is this just a hobby? Turns out, its inevitably a mixture of both ends— part treasured Pets, part hobby.
Fish Contest
The joy in Guppy appreciation is apparently the process of achieving your dream Guppy (aka THE prized Pet), all in all a delicate practice which requires multiple careful selections and streamlining processes.
Show Guppies
In a litter of newly produced Guppies, chances of obtaining one with the closest physical attributes of your liking is one out of approximately forty— and that’s just one of many steps. Now you can imagine how many aquariums you’re gonna be housing in the long run! The only cost factor is probably the water and electricity consumption of running the aquariums, or even premium feed.

Teenage Mutant Red-Eared Slider

Teenage Mutant Red-Eared Slider

If you have yet to come across the name Red Eared Slider, fret not, because we are certain you have seen them at least once in your life. Unfortunately it isn’t a new character in the cartoon, but the Red Eared Slider is Singapore’s most commonly sold pet terrapin, and while they may look absolutely adorable when they are young, they are often abandoned when they grow rapidly. Go through this article if you or your child is considering one!

Red Eared Slider Terrapin

The Red Eared Slider

Also known as Red Eared Terrapin, or Terrapin (because it is sooo common in Singapore), this species originated from South of United States, and North Mexico. The term slider was given in relation to the terrapin’s nature of “sliding” off rocks and surfaces to get back into water.

Red Eared Sliders Basking

Did you know, that the Red Eared Slider is considered a popular choice of pet throughout the world? Also, it has made the top 100 list for the world’s most invasive species, due to a ton of irresponsible releasing by pet owners.

Appearance

It should come by no surprise why this species is named Red Eared Sliders, for they spot noticeable red patches right behind their eyes, giving them “red ears”. They have a slightly flattened oval carapace (think, shell), a dark green hue on face, arms and legs, coupled with irregularly patterned stripes in a lighter shade of green, close to yellow.

Male and Female Red Eared Slider Comparison

One difference many have spotted between a female and male Red Eared Slider is the length of their front claws, apparently a Male has longer claws than a female. Also, there is a significant difference in size and length of their tails. Colour of their carapaces vary according to age, reportedly a change of colour while they age, from light green to dark, then to brown sometimes.

Personality

It is normal for a turtle to behave as a shy and easily frightened pet, and their shells serve the purpose of hiding and protection. Though, in captivity, some Red Eared Sliders have been known to approach their owners for food.

Baby Red Eared Slider on Human hand

If you do experience aggression in your pet terrapins, it is probably caused by sudden movements or that they are frightened. Aggression equals fear, this saying never gets old when referring to pets. They are otherwise docile as they come.

Housing

The Red Eared Slider is semi-aquatic, as such, they would require an ideal tank that is able to hold water, and raised spots for them to rest and sun bask at any time of the day. A screened top lid is perfect for preventing your terrapins from escaping, not to mention keeping out pesky insects.
You may start off with a large tank for these guys can grow up to 30 centimetres (OMG), or upgrade you tank space as they grow, they definitely require ample space to take a short swim, rest in shallow waters, and a docking area to sun bask.

Turtle Tank Set up

Owners often include a lamp strong enough to mimic sunlight, preferably bulbs that can withstand long hours of usage, with UVA and UVB rays. Always ensure that any rock or accessory placed within the tank is not small enough to be swallowed by the Terrapins.

Hygiene

Like most turtles, Red Eared Sliders are known to be messy eaters. Check the tank regularly and scoop out any uneaten food or faecal matter left behind by the terrapins. It not only contributes to dirt build up, but stench as well. Owners are advised to clean their tanks at least once a week, a good scrub down of tank surfaces and accessories with water. Regular soap should not be used as residue can cause serious and fatal harm to your pet terrapins. Be sure to use a "turtle friendly" cleaning solution diluted in water only if necessary, and as advised by reptile experts or pet shops.

Red Eared Slider Washing

Tank water should remain at room temperature before placing the terrapins back again. If you do find your terrapin’s carapace looking like they could use a good rinse too, remember they can still feel you through their shells, so only lightly scrub them with a soft bristle brush to get the dirt off. To ease of the process of cleaning the entire tank, some owners include a good water filter for their tanks, an investment worthy item in our honest opinion!

Food

The Red Eared Slider is an omnivore, which means they can thrive on both greens and small animals. A suggested diet for a terrapin is usually commercial food pellets, followed by occasional treats of freeze dried shrimps, insects like crickets and also meal-worms.

Red Eared Slider Feeding

Leafy greens are good for them too! A terrapin’s source of water comes from the water in their habitat, which is why tank cleanliness plays a huge part in keeping your terrapins happy.

Ownership In Singapore

As we have mentioned earlier, The Red Eared Slider is readily available and the most common terrapin you can find almost ANYWHERE. Sadly, these guys are often bought on impulse, because they are incredibly cute when they are young at only the length of 2 centimetres at first.

Red Eared Slider adult and baby

They have a lifespan of 20 years, and more with proper care, which makes them as good as a long term pet and companion. But this takes a toll on many owners, as the Red Tail Slider grows older, it grows in size as well (up to 30 centimetres). For those terrapins that do not make it to an old age, it is usually due to the lack of knowledge in a lot of kids and adults alike.

Adoption In Singapore

Local Shelters do not recommend The Red Eared Slider Terrapin to be a good choice of pet, they come with a long term commitment, and they do require a good amount of space as they grow into adulthood. Many current owners are strongly advised to not release them irresponsibly into the wild, but to find adopters instead. So if you are seriously considering owning a Red Eared Slider as a pet, please ensure you are prepared to take care of them for 20 years or more, and lookout for available options online!

Why Is The Koi Fish Lucky?

Why Is The Koi Fish Lucky?

Chinese New Year is a time where many would be exchanging Chinese idioms bestowing best wishes and greetings to one another. While we are rummaging through our minds what sort of idioms to say next, here’s a thinker for the ever popular,  “年年有鱼/ä½™“ (nian nian you yu). It translates to mean “Yearly Abundance”.

Koi Fish Pond

Lucky Koi Fish

In many Chinese New Year decorations and even paintings you often see Koi fishes as a representative species or icon for luck and prosperity. The history goes way beyond that, as we dive deeper into the intriguing and old folklore behind this “fishy” business.

Painting of Two Koi Fishes

The Japanese and Chinese have always had a rich culture with animal behaviour and how humans could learn from and benefit their everyday lives, and that does not leave out the Koi fish.

Koi fish legend Japan

We speak of a really old traditional Japanese legend which depicts how Koi fishes that lived in the lake at the bottom of a waterfall. The determined, strong Koi Fishes would swim upstream a waterfall of a place known as the Dragon Gate, performing utmost perseverance to reach the top. Only the lucky and hardworking ones successfully reach the top of the waterfall, and they are transformed into Dragons.

The Koi Fish Streamers (Koi Nobori)

Though we only see them as decorative Feng Shui pieces or as pets in pretty ponds and paintings locally, the celebration of Boy’s Day in Japan still portrays a wide usage of paper or cloth made Koi fishes as hanging streamers.

Japan Children's Day

Quite frankly we thought those were the ones that brought Fishermen their angler’s luck (Whoops). These streamers actually symbolises parents’ hopes of their boys growing up to be strong, courageous and successful like the Koi. It is said that the different coloured Koi fishes actually represents father and son.

Koinobori Japan

We can’t vouch if Koi fishes can truly swim and brave waterfalls, but that legend and culture has definitely been brought down though centuries and many countries.

GOLD fish

No riches or appropriate location to have some Koi fishes as pets? You’re in luck! Because the next closest relative in the carp family would have to be the Goldfish, and plus, they’re tinier! There are a variety of Goldfishes available, and most of them sporting an iridescent gold sheen
(Hence the name "Gold"fish)
Fantail Goldfish

Many have opted to keep Goldfishes as pets to bring about some fortune and luck in the premises, or personally.

Anyway, nothing comes easy. When we chance upon a school of pet Koi fishes, painting, sculpture, or mention the idiom, we should be reminded that with hard work and perseverance, success and fortune just might come your way!
