The Bulldog Breed: Bull Fighting Dogs Of England

A Dog breed from England with unmistakable physical traits and adorable face may not be a very common sight in our country— that does not stop them from being popular amongst many around the world. The history and personality of the Bulldog has modernized to make them an excellent companion and even a guard Dog

Fun Fact    Bulldogs are also adorably nicknamed Bullies by fans today. On the contrary to the nickname, they are much more of a docile companion!

The English Bulldog

Often referred to as the English or British Bulldog, this breed has been placed in association with the country for a long time and regarded as a national icon even, representing Determination and Courage. Bulldogs were introduced to America by the immigration of English folks, bringing along their Bulldogs in the process. Bulldogs were first mentioned in writings as early as the 1500s, during which, the spelling was Bondogge, and Bolddogge.

Today’s term of Bulldog was written in a letter from 1631-1632, by Preswick Eaton. They were also in a book of wildlife, fauna, flora and minerals of Britain by early English Scientist Christopher MerretButchers Bull, or Bear Dog. Bull in Bulldog can be derived from the early sport of Bull-baiting in England, whereby being the first Bulldog to bring down a Bull in the ring (grabbing Bull’s nose) will emerge victorious.

Unfortunately, the sport of Bull-baiting caused many deaths and injuries of Bulldogs. Although the sport grew continuously popular in England during the early 1800s, it was made illegal by Cruelty of Animals Act 1835— prohibiting the mistreatment of animals, including Bear-baiting and Cockfights. With sporting uses of the Bulldog now put to rest, the popularity of these Dogs began to decline. Until mid 17th century, Bulldogs were put to round-up Bulls for humans. The Bulldog is recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club) in 1886.

Appearance Of The Bulldog

Bulldogs bodies are robust and muscular, yet compact with a wide head and shoulders. They have naturally deep-set, round black eyes and a short muzzle. Also well recognized by the hanging skin under their necks, droppy lips and an upturned, underbite jaw.

A roll or rope (skin fold/roll) sits above their noses. Colours include Red White, Brindle, Piebald and Fawn, and can also consist of a combination of those colours. A Bulldog’s coat is short, sleek and shiny.

Grooming A Bulldog

Although a Bulldog is not known to shed much, special attention comes into play with their skin grooves/wrinkles. Using a Curry Brush made of rubber or soft brush, give them a thorough brushing at least three times a week, being extra meticulous in between skin folds. To maintain cleanliness between skin folds, use a damp cloth to remove buildup. Be sure to dry very thoroughly after.

Frequent proper brushing greatly reduces the need for a full bath. Trim their nails, clean out excess eye or ear buildup and practice good dental hygiene with a Vet approved cleanser and toothpaste. If you are unsure how to perform these tasks, seek help from your trusted Groomer or Veterinarian for advice and demonstrations!

Personality And Behaviour Of A Bulldog

Despite the aggressive and ferocious nature in earlier Bulldogs, the breed today has a much calmer and friendly personality. Bulldogs are known to be restful, indoor Dogs, and loving to humans of all ages. Though they may not be as fierce or strong as their ancestors, Bulldogs can double up as a docile companion and house guard.

Keeping your Bulldog fit and entertained promotes ease of training and better relationships with them, but they are known to be prone to heat strokes, and are only capable of short walks for exercise. Unfortunately, Bulldogs are known to have low lifespans, including skin issues, cancer, and breathing problems. With proper care and love, the oldest average lifespan of a Bulldog ranges from 8 to 10 years!
