The Bichon Frise: Perky, Curly Lap Dogs Of Europe

The Bichon Frise: Perky, Curly Lap Dogs Of Europe

Just one of the Dog breeds amongst the Bichon type, and often mistaken for a Maltese or Toy Poodle due to appearances, the Bichon Frise has been around for many centuries— from accompanying sailors across the Mediterranean to furry companions of Royalties in Europe, we can’t wait to learn what other information this breed can surprise us with!

The Bichon Frise Dog

With origins more commonly known as French, the Bichon Frise actually begun its humble beginnings as barter and sailing dogs with Spanish Seamen— also believed to be the first to introduced the breed to Canary Island, Tenerife. During the 14th century Italian sailors rediscovered the breed during voyages and were credited for returning them back to Europe, where their popularity rose amongst the Royal families. King Francis I of France had Bichon Frise Dogs of his own, but the success of the breed drastically surged due to King Henry III of England.

The Bichon was also a favourite muse for various art pieces and artists such as Francisco De Goya. Popularity of the Bichon Frise was sustained during the rule of King Napoleon III, however in the late 19th century, Bichon Frise Dogs were seen almost everywhere, belonging to street performers, working in circuses and guiding the blind. They were then deemed as common Dogs and the demand for Bichons decreased. In 1933 the official breed standard of the Bichon Frise was adopted by Société Centrale Canine (National Kennel Club of France) and this was believed to be due to the success of Belgian author  Hergé’s creation, The Adventures of Tintin— and his beloved white terrier dog named Milou (or Snowy in English editions).
Since the breed back then was referred to by Tenerife and Bichon, the President of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale then decided that the breed should have the term Frise, in relation to the curly appearance of the breeds’ coat. The Bichon Frise was first brought to the United States in 1955, and recognized under the Miscellaneous Class in 1971. This breed is one of five breeds in the Bichon type, which includes the Maltese (possibly why they have similar features!)

Appearance Of A Bichon Frise Dog

This is commonly small Dog weighing from 5 to 10 kilograms, though slightly larger sized Bichon Frise Dogs can also be seen. Their skulls are a little rounded and their muzzles are not known to be pointy, with black noses and dark coloured eyes. Their dense, curly coats are predominantly white with very tiny tinges of cream around their noses and paws.

Grooming Requirements Of A Bichon Frise

Due to the curling nature of their coats, Bichon Frise Dogs are usually styled and handles professionally by groomers and have minimal shedding. To maintain a tangle-free and clean coat at home, brush and comb them two to three times per week.

Keep their eye areas white and pristine as much as possible, always wipe their eye ducts to avoid tear staining. Trim their nails whenever necessary and brush their teeth to avoid dental issues. If you do not know how to perform these tasks, approach your trusted Groomer or Veterinarian for advice and demonstration

A Bichon Frise’s Personality

An uplifting, bubbly and affectionate Dog breed, the Bichon Frise can be trained easily with proper guidance. As they are playful companions that demand attention from their human owners, be sure to provide entertainment and playtime.

Bichon Frises are also alert and great watch-dogs— you might want to teach them the appropriate times to bark (may seem overly yappy to some) before they develop the habit of barking and alerting you at every little thing. With proper care and love, the average lifespan of a Bichon Frise is 12 to 15 years.
