What To Expect When The Pug Life Chooses You

What To Expect When The Pug Life Chooses You

If you’ve found yourself on this page, you might already have been hit with the Pug Life syndrome. What is that? Along with the famous quote of late Hip-Hop’s legendary rapper Tupac Shakur “I didn’t choose the Thug life, the Thug life chose me”, a ton of memes depicting a Pug in “street-wear” and bling took the internet by storm, most of which captioning the words “I didn’t choose the Pug life, the Pug life chose me”.

Googly eyes, OG face, legendary quote. It’s tough not to love the Pug.

Remember Frank from Men In Black? That sure brings back a lot of memories for us, and possibly the first time we were introduced to this particular Dog breed. Pugs are seen lazing around most of the time, and it is part of their many characteristics. But before you judge them, you might wanna know that the Pug is a dog breed that packs a whole lot of other amazing capabilities too?

The Pug Dog Breed

Pugs are a breed of companion Dogs, interestingly first bred by the Chinese Rulers. It was said that the Chinese have crafted the perfect way of developing these wrinkled skin on a Pug, pricing the most valuable Pug based on the forehead folds that resembled the Chinese character “” (Prince, or King). These Dogs were much treasured by the Emperors that they had to be guarded closely by soldiers at all times. Soon the Pug breed began to spread across Asia, becoming one of many pet Dogs belonging to the Monks in Tibet. Much like the Shih Tzu dog breed, Pugs were also said to resemble the Fu Lions (lion statues that sit outside temples and gates as protectors).

The Pug breed went on to gain popularity in Europe. From what experts derived, it is safe to say that the Pug Dogs we know of today is bred from the ancient ancestors. Royal families of Netherlands and United Kingdom recognised the Pug breed’s intelligence and loyalty and they were also a favourite of the late Queen Victoria, whom reportedly bred a few of her own Pugs as well! Due to its characteristics, the Pug is highly versatile, while they used be dressed in amusing costumes riding horse carriages in Italy, they were also used as scent trackers and guarding for the military. Pugs were first introduced to United States during the 19th century, and later on recognised by the AKC (American Kennel Club) in 1885.
Fun Fact      Did you know? That modern Pugs we see today have way shorter legs and snout as compared to before? Pugs in the past used to have their ears cropped off for aesthetics too, until it was made illegal! Thank god!

What Does A Pug Dog Look Like?

Now we may all be of different generations, but there was a point of time when the trend of plushies, or printed items with a Dog and enlarged googly eyes reached our shores. Love it or hate it, somehow we feel that the Pug ought to take all the credit for that, no matter how bizarre it was.

Pug appearances are distinctive when it comes to their wrinkled skin, short muzzle, short fine double coat, muscular square bodies and curved tail. Their muzzle, eyes, ears and nails are usually black, with fine black tickling down their spine to the tails. A common colour we’d probably spot is known as Fawn (light cream/off-white), other colours include Apricot Fawn and also Black.

Grooming For A Pug

A Pug’s short double coat is surprisingly quite the shedding machine, as observed by many. Brush their loose hair out twice a week to reduce the amount of fly-away hair in the house, and invest in a Pet hair vacuum to make clean-up a lot faster. Other basic grooming needs include water baths whenever necessary, cleaning of ears with a Vet-approved cleanser and cotton ball.

Pug’s eyes are more prone to injuries and dirt buildup due to its protruding nature, check on their eyes every so often to ensure they are fine. Make sure their nails are not clacking on the ground, if they are, its about time for a clipping. If you do not know how to perform these tasks, it would be best to consult a trusted Vet or Groomer for advice or professional service

Why Do People Love Pugs So Much?

What the internet portrays the Pug Dog breed to be isn’t entirely false. These lovable canine companions do have a bag full of amusing antics, especially for the fact that they love lazing and napping around.

Pugs are actually excellent guard Dogs that would alert you at the presence of an intruder, and yet affectionate enough to be around children. Pugs are also highly intelligent, but stubbornness could get in the way of training, take socialisation from a young age and house training for example. Persistence and patience as always!

Owning A Pug

While adaptable to apartment living conditions, don’t forget to bring them out for walks, to maintain a healthy weight. Monitoring and moderation of diet goes a long way for Pugs, as they tend to overeat when unsupervised and may face obesity issues. While that may look extremely adorable, it really isn’t good for our canine pals.

Pugs also do not fair too well in heat, so keep an eye on them whenever you’re both out on a walk! These Dogs are highly receptive to human companionship, a neglected Pug would get depressed, so don’t forget to shower them with lots of attention and love. A healthy, happy Pug has an average lifespan of 13 to 15 years.
