Pet Fiesta & Family Day at United Square
As locals we find
United Square a less frequented mall as compared to the other neighbourhood
malls, so it definitely sparked our interests further when we found out about
this event. And indeed we went, on the 30th April, Sunday, for Pets
Fiesta & Family Day (United Square), organised by Newton Neighbourhood Committee.
What Was Expected
To be honest we weren’t
too sure what to expect, having not been to United Square for quite some time,
and never attended any outdoor events there before, we went with an open mind. After
all, the event details pointed to quite treat, bird lovers display, air plant
workshops, Children activities, and a free health check for your pets by Mount
Pleasant Veterinary Group (if you
purchase the event tickets). Tickets came with free goodie-bag and food coupons
too. All that seems pretty standard for a neighbourhood Pet event, either way,
we decided to check it out ☺
What We Saw
First off
the bat, the event layout was rather unusual due to the allocated space, it
wasn’t the regular cluster or rectangular space, so it was a tad bit confusing
where to start, but nevertheless, you could just follow the booths. The heat
was beginning to get to us, at the same time, we couldn't resist staying longer to take a look at the adorable Pets.
An Array of Meowdels
So we
began with the most prominent booth which belonged to the Cat Welfare Society, Volunteers
and their foster Cats ready to dazzle potential pawrents. As always the kitties
look to be in great condition, and because of the heat, a few of them were
getting pretty restless that afternoon. Volunteers were ever ready with fans
and even ice packs to cool the Cats down (what
kind, responsible Cat lovers!)
There were
also 2 Maine Coons accompanying their owners at the Supercoon booth that day,
the Coons were a huge hit with the kids and adults, and all we could say was
how adorable one of the Coons was, always wanting a hug from it’s owner.
I'm so soft, ain't I? |
Health Check
Mount
Pleasant Veterinary Group was stationed at their booth, performing health
checks for pets and advising pawrents on pet care and tips again. This is the
second time we have ran into them, the first was at It’s a Paw Party by Lim Tai
See Community. Sure is nice to know of an active Veterinary group participation
for community events.
Okay, Let's take a look at your Pom here! |
Adopt, Don’t Shop
SPCA Booth |
ASD in action! |
3 shelters/organisations
were present that day, all of which hard at work raising funds and on the
lookout for adoptive pawrents! Apart from SPCA
(Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals), there were ASD (Action for Singapore Dogs), and EM (Exclusively Mongrels), with their
array of adorable Mongrels up for adoption! Since this wasn’t the first time
seeing them, we couldn’t help but wonder if a few Dogs were the very same puppies
we saw at Sunset Way’s Family Day! (if
so, they sure have grown up well!)
We can't get over how pretty those eyes are |
Water break Guys, gotta stay hydrated! |
Other Activities
Products
on sale included merchants Perro and Wholesome Paws, and SuperCoon, bringing us
to the quiet end of the event, a small, curved lineup of other booths. To be
honest the only activity that caught our eyes were the laid out paintings by
children, and we were lucky to capture 2 girls doing just that.
Was It Worth The Trip?
Sun's still blazing! |
We wanna be
honest as can be with all our reviews, being pet owners ourselves ☺, and here’s
our take: Perhaps
the weather was a bummer and unexpected, but the standing Fans were overworked
and not helping, we could see some Animals struggling, thank goodness their volunteers
were attentive. That could also be one of the reasons why the crowd started
avoiding the event. The Main Stage had no happenings and located a little
astray from it all, which kinda made us wonder why it was there. Good on the Emcee
who tried to keep event goers entertained by walking around the event though!
Main Stage |
Not too
sure if we missed it, but we covered the entire event, only to come across ONE
bird perched on its owner’s hand. Tad disappointed that there wasn’t a Bird
display, especially when details state otherwise. Last but not least, we’re
pretty sure regular Pet event goers are aware that bottles of free water are usually
handed out (especially if the weather was
sooo hot), sadly, at this event, water was provided to ticket buyers. Tickets were going at $5, well we aren’t misers because those funds should go to a good cause, but the event just didn’t feel
justifiable.
Looking at us cheers you right up! |
Let me pet you Kitty! |
Still, it ain't all bad, and enjoyable even if you did not buy the tickets, and it was a good time seeing familiar peeps, and much more
Cats than usual at an event, and the children did seem to be having fun! Perhaps the public would've stayed longer, if not for the dreadful heat ☺
