Yishun's Devil Ring of Crazies, Cursed, And Perverse
You don’t have to be a resident of Yishun (also known as Nee Soon) to be aware of the unfortunate events that have been notoriously happening all around an area fondly dubbed “The Devil’s Ring” by a fellow Singaporean blogger. The coincidence and occurrences of these events were too uncanny to go unnoticed, and the reports went on and on, from brutal murders, ridiculous sex trades, genital flashing lunatics, mad traffic accidents and a chain of cat killings. There seems to be every reason why you should NOT visit this town, but just maybe…
Yishun Is Not All Gloom And Doom
Yishun was brightened
up by the presence of animals (not in a bad way), at the recent Nee Soon GRC
Pets Fiesta 2017, and boy was it a lively event. So it’s the time of the year
again where Pet lovers from all walks of life participate in a massive gathering,
right here in the “crazy district” of Singapore. We couldn’t help butting our noses in for this year’s Pets
Fiesta, held at a massive space right across Khatib MRT. What we saw was a huge
stage, a smorgasbord of adoption, educational, live demonstration and product booths,
all under a huge tent.
The fluctuating
weather conditions did nothing to deter the turnout and it was a spectacular
showcase of people and their furry, feathery companions that left our eyes no
time to wander elsewhere. We could never stress enough on the importance of
research and knowledge before getting a pet, and these two points are just as
important if you do own a pet, and this event had every means of educating the
crowd on better pet ownership!
Main Stage
Up on the main stage,
an array of stage acts went on back to back, Pet owners had a great opportunity
parading their pets on stage for the competitions. Even for event goers that
did not bring along their pets, it was an eye opener to see some exotic breeds
and some impeccably dapper looking pets putting forward their best in obedience and best dressed segments!
Flights Of Fancy
If you think you can
only get to watch beautiful tropical birds perform at the Jurong Bird Park,
then we strongly beg to differ, because we got a first-hand look and feel
session right here at the Pets Fiesta.
A myriad of tropical Parrots led by
Flightmasters founder Daniel and his team of bird training specialists gave
event goers a chance to get up close and personal with these very well-tamed
and magnificent feathered friends. It’s not all fun and games as the team also
gave talks on proper ways of handling a pet bird, which included grooming and useful care tips too!
Canine First Responder Team
Who says First Aid is
only meant for Humans? At a Pet event like this, owners can be put at ease
knowing there is a Canine First Respond Team on standby for any form of
emergency (Phew!). But it doesn’t stop there, Maggie from Dog First Aid was also
giving educational demonstrations and tips on things an owner can do in the
case of an emergency.
These tips are sure handy and assuring to have on hand
for any Pawrent! Dog First Aid has been part of this event as Canine First
Responder Team for 3 years in a row now.
Hopping Madness
Though the majority
of pets we saw were Dogs and Cats, this event did not leave out the tiny ones,
which were none other than Rabbits. This was a great plus point, as Rabbits are
quite a challenge to own for any inexperienced owner. With booths sitting side
by side, Angie’s Pets and the House of Rabbits Society laid down some serious
ground work packed with educational tips and most importantly, a live grooming
and handling workshop carried out by Angie herself!
This was a refreshing
change as compared to seeing Holland Lops behind a glass display at a Pet Shop.
Rabbits were also available for adoption and for those that weren’t were having
a binky good time free roaming, under the care of Angie and her team.
Cattitude And Doggy Smiles At It’s Best
Local animal shelters and familiar names like Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES), Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) played their part in this
event, educating, promoting adoption and raising funds for the animals in need.
Nothing stops the
charming fosters and volunteers of the Cat Welfare Society from the hunt for
good homes for their feline friends, and we were warmly welcomed by an
affectionate kitty, rewarding us with her satisfied and blissful face even
though she was all cosy in her box for shade amidst the heat from the
weather. All of these Cats are given good care and it is evident from their
state of well-being. Some even donned on bow ties to look extra good for their
future adopters J
Lookin' Good, Ginger!
Let’s not forget our
Doggy pals that were lovingly brought up by the good people of Uncle Khoe’s K9
shelter, we had a lovely chat with Irene as she spoke of important issues that
local shelters are striving to improve for these rescued animals. We couldn’t
help but notice how well behaved these pooches were, joining in the good fun
and vibes, ready to be petted and brought home by potential adopters.
Treats, Supplies, Toys And Accessories
We took a break from
the fluffy kingdom and went on a little hunt for other goodies, hoping to snag
something interesting for our own pets. It was a pity they did not have
anything on sale for Birds, but there were a lot of vendors for the other pets
like Dogs and Cats no less.
Besides quality pet supplies going at special and attractive promos, there were a variety of stylish and Eco-friendly goods, such as collars, toys, pet dishes, pet beds and artisan treats!

Shop owners did
not miss their chances to have their furkids join in the bustle as well. And if
that wasn’t enough, starving humans got their fair share of snack vendors in a
nice allocated corner with tables and chairs to dine in and rest their feet. J
Pet Walk-A-Thon
Dogs, Cats, Rabbits,
Birds and even Guinea Pigs sure got their paws and claws busy that day, apart
from partaking in competitions, they got to take a nice stroll alongside with the
Guest of Honor, Mr K. Shanmugam, the Minister of Home Affairs and Law of Singapore
and Yishun’s very own MP, Assoc. Prof Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim.
Picture Perfect
Mr Shanmugam and Mr Faishal arrived at the event greeted with a line of Pet owners and their pets, all eager to have a picture perfect moment with them, which they were only too glad to do so.

Did you know that the Walk-a-thon was held in attempt to set a
record in Singapore’s books? Oh, and they sure did! We’re pretty sure it was
warm, fuzzy feelings all around for the crowd to see Mr Shanmugam and Mr
Faishal in action themselves during the walk-a-thon, with their very own furry companions
for the day.
On your paws, Get set, Go!
Overview
For an event in the
neighbourhood, the turnout was astonishingly huge, we estimated a total of 5000
participants throughout the day, from different locations of Singapore. We went
with the expectation to see only Dogs prowling the space, but we sure caught a
nice surprise to see Cat owners cradling their own feline companions to join in
the bustle and fun. We’re talking massive Cats like Maine Coons and exquisitely
beautiful Persians, Angoras and round faced Tabbies that are just too cute.
A very well-kept All-white Maine Coon: Check out those huge kitty paws!
Just look at that face. Too. Adorable.
Pretty Yani & her pretty Persian-Angora
Amanda's kitty had a sweet personality, just like her family
Seeing the myriad of Dogs there was no disappointment as well, it got us
wishing we had brought along our own. Breath-taking Huskies, majestic Poodles,
obedient Golden Retrievers and fluffy Pomeranians, the list goes on and on. It was paradise for Pets and owners alike to mingle and even meet owners with love for the same breed!
You've got a Pom? We've got a Pom! #PomSquad
Butter prefers his picture taken at a comfortable stance
Because Sunday was soooo well-behaved: Have you gotten your Pet insurance?
Ivy had to rescue this lil pup right before the event!
Max looking snazzy with his owner. *Bang bang!*
Looks like the Goodie Bag had perfect multi-uses
Oh Milky...We could spend the whole day with you.
To meet avid Bird lovers was another highlight of the day, Love birds, Macaws, Cockatoos displayed a spectrum of beautiful colours as they perched happily on their owner's shoulders.

What we loved most
about the event were the efforts of the various Pet Organisations, Groups and
Shelters on imparting their knowledge and skills to the public. These are kind
souls with utmost love and sincerity for animals in their respective fields,
and it is never too late to gain great tips on ensuring your pet has a happy and
healthy life. It was a pretty tiring but utterly fruitful day, and we had a pawfect
time indeed.
