Black Cat Is Not Bad Luck

Black Cat Is Not Bad luck

We are all mostly aware of saying “If a Black Cat crosses your path, it’s bad luck.” And having grown up in an Asian culture, the older folks just do not have a thing for the colour Black in general (i.e. Never wear Black clothing during Chinese New Year)

We couldn’t help but feel that all the Black kitties in the neighbourhood have all been misunderstood! Yes we have come across a ton of Black Cats all the time, but we’ve always thought they were regular strays. Read on, you’re in for a pleasant surprise

Bombay Cat

Developed by Cat breeder in Louisville, Nikki Homer was attempting to create a domestic Cat breed that has similar appearance to a Black Panther (miniature one of course). This was done by crossbreeding a Sable Burmese and an all-Black American Shorthair.

The first attempt was a failure but the second attempt that was a success eventually gained recognition from the CFA (Cat Fanciers’ Association) in 1978, and TICA (The International Cat Association) in 1979. The name of this all black Cat was Bombay.

What Does A Bombay Cat Look Like?

Do you remember Sabrina the Teenage Witch? She had an all-Black Cat by her side named Salem, also known to be an American Short Hair breed (one half of the Bombay concoction ☺) Basically, a Bombay Cat is a medium sized kitty with a strong muscular body.

Their short, fine plush coats are always in one colour only, Black. This coat is a smooth to touch, glossy-shiny look all over the Cat, paired with Copper eyes. We must say, there is something charming and mysterious about the colour Black, especially on a Cat, enhancing their bright Copper eyes.

Grooming Needs For A Bombay Cat

If you ever get a chance to feel a Bombay Cat, you’d be glad to know that the short, smooth, glossy fine coat requires minimal grooming. The best part, they do not shed much at all too! A weekly brushing with the use of a curry comb should help rid loose hair and provide your Bombay Cat a good’ol massage. Don’t forget to check if their ears are dirty, and clean them out with a cotton ball and a Vet-recommended ear cleanser. Practice good oral hygiene and trim their nails whenever necessary.

Bombay Cat Personality

Despite the common misconception of their appearances, Bombay Cats are really sociable and friendly creatures that earn for human attention. Maybe it’s a tad difficult to tell of their expressions because of their colour, but they have beautiful expressive eyes and actions that say otherwise. Bombays tend to get pretty loyal and clingy at times, and they do not fancy being neglected for a long period of time.

Although they’re friendly, they have that one special person they hold closest in their hearts (Aww). Bombay kitties are great with children and other animals, but interestingly enough, they’re pretty dominant Cats that would only put up with another kitty when they’ve established that it’s the “alpha”. Otherwise, you’re looking at a calm, intelligent and affectionate Black feline companion

Owning A Bombay In Singapore

Just like the love for all-White animals, there are some with the love for all-Black Pets too. And as you can tell by now, this is a Cat breed that requires very low grooming maintenance, but they do not thrive well without human interaction. Be ready for the commitment and responsibility before you decide on any Pet. Bombays can be kept entertained with simple or fancy toys, but your affection trumps all else With proper care and love, the average lifespan of a Bombay Cat is 15 to 20 years.

Adopt, Don’t Shop

Specific breeds are great, but we could say the same for all other crossbreeds and rescued strays. Before you head off to purchase a Pet, always keep an eye out for adoption drives or check out local shelters and groups for more options, you could always count on finding your next sweet kitty and providing a forever home for a rescued furry pal. We feel that there could be a high chance you’d see a Bombay look-a-alike
